Rick McKinstry receives Katz-Mason Award

CINCINNATI, Ohio — The Air & Surface Transport Nurses Association (ASTNA) is honored to recognize Mr. Richard McKinstry as this year's Katz-Mason Award recipient. The Katz-Mason Award is presented to an active member of ASTNA who is a registered nurse and has demonstrated exceptional leadership and has had a positive impact on flight transport nursing on a global scale. Aureus sponsord this year's award. Rick is the Education Coordinator for Louisville Medical Center STATCARE Air Medical Program in Louisville, KY.

As described in the nomination letter written by Walter Middleton:

Rick has made a 'positive impact on flight/transport nursing on a global scale' through his commitment to educate flight nurses and flight paramedics. Rick has participated in the education of more than six thousand people and more than two hundred class offerings in 2003.

Rick started his flight nursing career in 1986. He has served as the Education Coordinator for STATCARE since 1998 where he continues to practice in a multi-purpose role as a flight nurse, preceptor, and educator. He has been a Certified Flight Nurse (CFRN) since 1993 and holds additional certifications in Certified Emergency Nurse (CEN), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), and Trauma Nurse Specialist. Risk is also a Trauma Nurse Advanced Trauma Course (TNATC) Instructor, Basic Trauma Life Support (BTLS) Instructor, Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) Instructor, and Geriatric Emergency Medical Services (GEMS) course instructor. He is very active in the transport industry and is a current member of the Kentucky Chapter of the Association of Air Medical Services (AAMS), Kentucky Emergency Nurses Association (ENA), and the Air & Surface Transport Nurses Association.

Awarded the "Wings Award" from Kentucky AAMS in 1997 as Flight Nurse of the Year in Kentucky, Rick is an example of dedication, commitment, and excellence to our field of flight nursing. ASTNA would like to congratulate Rick and express our appreciation for his most professional and enthusiastic representation of transport nurses. Rick accepted the award at the ASTNA Membership Luncheon held during the Air Medical Transport Conference on October 27, 2004.
