How We Respond

  • Average helicopter lift off time: Our average helicopter lift-off time is 7 minutes, 30 percent less than the national standard. Mandatory safety inspections, weather checks, and engine warm-up account for almost the entire lift-off time.
  • Response time to your area: Our response time to your area will vary, based on your location. Please call us for the exact average time. Actual response time will vary depending on actual helicopter location, crew activities, and the weather at the time of your call.
  • Average helicopter cruising speed: Our EC-135 P2 has an average cruising speed of 150 mph. Our BK-117 has an average cruising speed of 152 mph. Our TwinStar AS355 has an average cruising speed of 140 mph.
  • Air stand-by: EMS agencies or hospitals can place us on "stand by" whenever you are uncertain if STATCARE is actually needed. If our estimated response time to your location is over 15 minutes, then STATCARE will automatically launch our helicopter and proceed to your location. You are free to cancel us at any time if you determine our services are not needed.
  • Flight conditions -- IFR and VFR: Weather is often a determining factor in our ability to respond. Aircraft can fly under two sets of rules called "Visual Flight Rules" (VFR) and "Instrument Flight Rules" (IFR).
Under Visual Flight Rules our pilot must rely on his own vision to fly the aircraft. Our TwinStar AS355 and EC-135 P2 are VFR-only aircraft.
Under Instrument Flight Rules our pilot must rely on instrument readings and air traffic control to fly from and to specific airports. IFR gives us a distinct advantage when weather conditions prevent VFR flights. Our BK-117 aircrafts is capable of both IFR and VFR flights.
All of our aircraft have defined flying minimums for ceiling and visibility during both day and nighttime flights. When you call STATCARE our pilots will perform a weather check to determine if inclement weather will prevent us from flying to your location or from flying the patient to the receiving hospital.
  • Multiple modes of transport: We have several options to transport your patient.
    • Helicopter: Our helicopters can often reduce the time it takes to arrive at your exact location and deliver a patient directly to the receiving hospital. A combination of speed -- and the ability to fly in a straight line -- can significantly reduce the time it takes the patient to receive definitive care.
    • Airplane: Our airplanes can frequently fly in weather that would otherwise preclude helicopter flight. For longer distances the speed of the airplane can offset the time it takes to transfer the patient from the airport to the hospital.
    • Ground: When circumstances prevent us from flying, we won't leave you stranded. We can make arrangements to transport the patient by ground ambulance if necessary.
